Bio:
Last spring the MTW staff began it’s annual talent hunt, auditioning over 800 people for the five 1992 summer productions. One role was particularly challenging to cast; Don Lockwood in Singin in the Rain. We needed a charismatic dancer-singer-actor who had the talent (and stamina!) to re-create Gene Kelly’s famous movie routines live onstage – with no chance to lip-sinc the songs or do re-takes on the dances! The script also calls for someone who is movie-star handsome, and who could create a character who is cocky without being obnoxious. Boy, were we glad when Michael Gruber crossed our path! A former NCAA All American springboard and platform diver, Michael has done extremely well since bringing all of his discipline and focus to the musical stage. Michael was the final Mike (“I Can Do That”) when A Chorus Line closed it’s record-breaking run on Broadway. He then went on to create a role in Miss Saigon, taking a three-week break from that for our Singin in the Rain, and then going immediately into Broadway’s most recent musical, My Favorite Year. Michael is a native Cincinnatian, an alumnus of the College-Conservatory of Music, Cincinnati, OH, and is also a composer/arranger, who recently completed his first musical play Hypatia with collaborator Jennifer Allen. We hope Michael’s schedule will allow another visit with us this summer for Good News!
