Mason Keeps the Gags Coming
by Martin F. Kohn
Mason's next project is a Broadway musical, "Laughing Room Only," with new songs, a cast of six and even a plot: Shocked by the $10-million cost of producing a Broadway musical, Mason and company mount one for $19.95.
"It's songs, it's gags, it's lines," says Mason, who declines to give his age, although published sources say he's 72. "Unpredictable zany, crazy situations are coming and going." The show is scheduled to preview in October and open in November.
The musical will be "a departure for my career," the comic says. And, yes, Mason can sing.
"I was a cantor all my life," he says proudly. "Now that I'm going into a musical, I brought back my voice and it's a sensation."
