Jackie Mason Musical Set for Fall Broadway Bow
by Cara Joy David
Jackie Mason is coming back to Broadway and this time he'll be strutting his stuff in a musical. That's right--a musical! Broadway.com has learned that Laughing Room Only, which the famed comedian wrote and will star in, will open at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in October.
Laughing Room Only is the new title of burlesque variety show Scandals, which we previously reported on in July of 2001. The show promises to feature a large cast, lots of music and the characteristic Mason humor. Former Paper Mill Playhouse Artistic Director Robert Johanson directs. "It is going to be different from anything he has done before," a Mason representative told Broadway.com. "It is not what you'd expect for his target market."
Before it hits the Great White Way, Laughing Room Only will have its world premiere at the Helen Hayes Theatre Company in Nyack, New York from September 19 through October 5.
The Brooks Atkinson's current tenant, The Look of Love, is scheduled to end its limited engagement at the theater on June 29.
