'Cats' Commemorative Released
by Bob Curtright

(excerpt)

The new commemorative edition of the long-running musical "Cats" is out, and Music Theater of Wichita fans may recognize a familiar face under the fur and whiskers of the character Munkustrap.

He's Michael Gruber, who appeared this past summer as the male lead in "Singin' in the Rain" but who has been here on stage several times. In "Cats," Munkustrap is a large gray tabby who is the narrator, giving Gruber quite a bit of on-camera time.

The two-volume "Cats Commemorative Edition" (Universal: $19.98 VHS, $29.98 DVD) contains not only the show that became the long-running musical on Broadway (19 years!), but also a bonus tape with behind-the-scenes interviews with star Elaine Page (who sings the anthem "Memories") and creator Andrew Lloyd Webber.
